My nostrils flared as I inhaled sharply, lengthening my spine and sucking my stomach in.  My knuckles turned white as I tugged both sides together, but it was no use.

When I talk to my friends about exercise, the same thing always comes up:  Not enough time.  With jobs, kids, a house to take care of, and a million other things to do, it makes sense.

My eyelashes fluttered and shifted as I stole a glance from across the room.  It had been months, but I hadn’t forgotten.  I couldn’t.

Breathing out slowly from my nose, I turned my gaze back to my brother, who was talking about his latest vintage machinery purchase.

“You can do it,” I thought to myself.  Inhaling, I raised my chin high and relaxed my face to signal that I didn’t care in the slightest about them, teasing me from my parents’ kitchen.  That they were powerless over me.  That they wouldn’t hurt me again.  Of course they were powerless.  I’m a grown woman!

My eyes scanned the appetizers at my friend’s Christmas party, searching for something – anything – I could eat without feeling a pang of regret later.

I felt a growl in my stomach and that tingling of my mouth just starting to water at the smell of baked brie, cheesy quiche, and gloriously buttery pastries. Dejected, I hung my head and walked away, dhoulders slumped, silently chiding myself for not having eaten before I came.

It wasn’t my friend’s fault.  It’s not her job to cater to my diet and lifestyle.  That’s MY job!  And I had failed.

I stood there, biting my lip, fists clenched and turning white.  I’d known her party wouldn’t be laid with a dazzling display of healthy holiday appetizers.  I was mad…  At myself.  Why didn’t I eat before?  Better yet, why didn’t I bring something healthy to share?  What was I thinking?

I’m guessing you’re busy.

As in, sometimes you feel like you don’t even have time to breathe.  Working late, taking the kids here and there, dealing with the endless stream of issues that pop up every day.

Sometimes we get so busy just trying to get it all done.  Checking off all the boxes.  Crossing things off the to-do list.

Getting stuff done is great – I’m a big believer in achievement and taking action.  But what good is checking off all those boxes if you’re the in the same place at the end of the week?  What good is achievement to you as a woman if it isn’t a transformative experience?

Unless you take deliberate steps to learn and grow as a person, you’re stuck at point A in terms of personal development.
