Tired of dust bunnies raining down every time you tidy your fans? Learn how to clean ceiling fans without getting dust everywhere!

I paused to admire the quiet beauty.

The small, white flakes drifted downward, in soundless grace, until they came to rest below.

It was lovely to look at, but like most weather events, it was incredibly inconvenient.

Despite the fact that they whirl around at high velocity, ceiling fans still manage to grab tons of dust.  What’s worse, when you go to clean them, you often end up pushing a bunch of that dust down onto whatever is below!

Sort of like that time I made it “snow” on my bed… it was a blizzard when I did some long-overdue dusting on the ceiling fan in my bedroom.  While the dust looked lovely wafting down, I wasn’t excited to have it landing all over my duvet.

As a result, I came up with 3 simple tricks to help make dusting ceiling fans less messy.  Let’s do this!  Read on below, or watch my video tutorial on how to dust ceiling fans!

How to Clean Ceiling Fans

Dusting ceiling fans is an important part of both deep cleaning and weekly cleaning.  Like I said above, these 3 tips for dusting ceiling fans are super simple… but they’re worth their weight in, well, dust.

Use a Quality Duster

Part of the problem might be that you’re using a duster that pushes dust around, rather than trapping it.

I’ve found that the secret to trapping dust is static.  If your duster doesn’t create static, you’ll mostly be pushing dust around.  As a result, a high-quality, lush duster will go a long way.

I used to use an old sock on my hand to clean our ceiling fans.  But it didn’t trap much dust, and I always ended up getting dust in my face and hair.

Now, my favorite thing to use is the Swiffer 360 Duster.  The heads are refillable, it’s nice and fluffy, it has an extendable handle for reaching all the way up to  ceiling fans, and it traps TONS of dust.

Place a Flat Sheet Below the Fan

I used to hate it when the dust on our fans would rain down onto my bed, the kitchen floor, and anything else below.  It was like cleaning up the same mess twice!

Because of this, I started putting an old, clean flat sheet on top of whatever is below the ceiling fan before dusting.  After dusting, I fold the corners of the sheet in, and move on to dust the next fan.  After I’ve dusted all the ceiling fans, I throw the flat sheet in the washing machine.

This is such a huge time saver, especially for fans that have lots of dust on them!  Which brings me to my 3rd simple tip for how to clean ceiling fans…

Dust More Often

The more frequently you clean your ceiling fans, the less messy cleaning them will be.  It’s easier to clean a slightly dusty fan than one that’s dripping in dust bunnies!  I’d recommend dusting ceiling fans about once per week.  Even if you have pets or live in a dry climate, weekly cleaning will probably be fine.

How to Clean Ceiling Fans:  Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed these tips for how to clean ceiling fans without making a big, dusty mess.  Cleaning doesn’t have to feel hard or take tons of time.  The right tools and a few tricks here and there are all you need!
