Figuring out how to keep your carpets clean with pets is tricky. Develop these 4 simple habits to keep your carpets looking great with dogs or cats at home!

My carpets weren’t exactly tan.  Well, not anymore.  They weren’t exactly gray, either.  They were covered in so much pet hair, they looked like a pet themselves.

I’d had enough of the embarrassment of messy, pet-stained carpets.  It was time to take action.

Pets aren’t just animals who live in your home.  They’re a part of the family!  Like all family members, pets contribute to the messes in a household.  It’s especially tricky to figure out how to keep your carpets clean with pets.  Today, I’m sharing 4 simple habits I developed to keep my carpets looking great with 3 cats in my home.

How to Keep Your Carpets Clean With Pets

Before we get into my tips on how to keep your carpets clean with pets, you should know 1 thing.  The more often you perform the tasks below, the better your carpets will look.

When you have dogs or cats, keeping your carpeting looking great requires almost daily effort.  It’s much quicker and more effective to do daily touch-ups than to avoid cleaning until your carpets look really bad.  By taking quick daily action, you’ll reduce the amount of work required overall to keep carpets in decent shape.

Okay, now that you’re (hopefully!) committed to doing a little bit of maintenance each day, let’s talk about how to keep your carpets clean with pets.

By the way, check out my 2 favorite tips on how to keep your carpets clean with pets in this video!

Perform a Daily Walkthrough for Pet Hair

First, do a quick daily circuit around the carpeted rooms in your home and manually pick up any visible pet hair.  As a result, you’ll be able to avoid carpets covered in pet hair by the end of the week.

Your carpets will also be company-ready.  Because of this, you won’t have to worry about dragging out the vacuum constantly, or feeling embarrassed when someone stops by unexpectedly.

Spot Clean Stains ASAP

During your daily sweep for pet hair, you should also check for pet stains.  Take note of where they are, and clean them up as soon as possible.

Old, dried-up pet vomit, urine, or poo are bad news, and can take lots of work to clean.  As a result, you should strive to clean up pet stains quickly once they’re discovered.

You can use a high-quality pet stain remover and a rag.  Or, you can also try an automated solution like the Bissell SpotBot Pet automatic carpet stain remover.  Check out my full review of the Bissell SpotBot Pet for more info.

Wipe Paws When Pets Come Indoors

Next on the list of how to keep carpets clean with pets:  A little preventative maintenance.  If your cats or dogs spend time outside, be sure to wipe their paws before they come into the house.  Even if the ground isn’t wet, gently wiping paws will stop dirty tracks at the door.

Vacuum Regularly With a Carpet Refresher

Finally, you should vacuum your carpets regularly – at least once per week – with a carpet refresher.  Obviously, vacuuming will remove any extra pet hair from your carpets.  But using a refresher product will help eliminate pet odors from an otherwise clean carpet.

Carpet refreshers are super easy to use.  They usually come in powder form.  To use carpet refresher, sprinkle the powder lightly over your carpets.  Then, vacuum it up.  It’s that simple!  Your carpets will smell great after.  Using carpet refresher is an often-overlooked, but super useful solution to the problem of how to keep carpets clean with pets.

How to Keep Carpets Clean With Pets:  Conclusion

Pets are part of the family, but it can be hard to keep carpets tidy with cats or dogs in the house.  Developing a few carpet maintenance habits, and cleaning carpets periodically, will help you keep your carpeting clean.  Here’s a quick recap of my 4 tips for how to keep carpets clean with pets:

  • Do a daily walkthrough of carpeted rooms to pick up any loose pet hair
  • Spot clean pet stains as soon as possible (look for stains during daily walkthroughs)
  • Wipe pets’ paws before they come indoors
  • Vacuum carpets regularly using a carpet refresher powder
